Submerge Yourself

It’s so beautiful under there. It’s so still – time just stops. It is almost like you are swimming through the wave in slow motion, digging through the thickness of blue liquid.

Do you open your eyes under water? You ask.

You see this full, clean wave approaching you, the tip is beginning to curl, creating the perfect shape, your toes barely touching the ground. You take your last breath and submerge yourself under the heap of water. It’s quiet, you look to the right and the body beside you is gracefully pushing through, no faster than you. You look forward, and it’s a wide-open space, full of nothing. You see the sun-rays shining through the surface as you look up. You are guided to the top. You could probably hold your breathe a little longer but you break free from the water. Instant noise fills your ears. Water crumbling, people talking, wind howling. A second wave comes, joy fills your body. You take a bigger breath this time – you want to take longer. You fill your lungs, you dive deeper. You touch the sand and grab a handful, watching it gently fall between your fingers. This time you don’t swim, you let the wave roll over you. Is this what it would feel like in space? Effortless and light. For a moment you feel safe – you are safe. The sun rays appear again, but you fight the temptation to follow them. You swim forwards, towards the open space. You release some bubbles; you are in control. You want to keep going. Challenge yourself. How far can you go? Forever you think.
